google frozen freeze iceAfter the awesome Google releases we’ve seen recently, it would seem as though they’re gearing up to hibernate for a while.

This is similar to the way the US Congress adjourns for the year when winter arrives, and before that, there’s a huge amount of activity to get things done before the deadline. (more…)

yahoo-law-enforcement-complianceThis week, someone leaked a secret Yahoo document pertaining to their policies on giving out user information to federal authorities.  Most of us know that to some extent ISP’s and other companies are required by law to hand over information on its users if they become involved in suspicious activities.  But do you know how much they hand out…and how much they charge? Google Personalized Search

Two days ago Google unveiled the brand new “Personalized Search”.  It’s basically (another way for Google to find out everything about you) a new tool that uses your web history to provide you with more relevant search results.  For example, say you type in “Unique Websites” on Google Search.  Normally, you will come up with thousands of results, with TheTeenGeek.com on page two.  Well, if you have Personalized Search enabled, and you visit TheTeenGeek.com more frequently than other websites on the results list, then TheTeenGeek.com result will show up first! After the break there  is a video that Google composed to explain it’s new product. (more…)

Why Firefox is NOT better than Chrome

I recently read a blog post by someone that I know to be a very intelligent geek, who is also a frequent visitor to this site. This person is as far as I know normally very rational, and is certainly not the sort of person I would expect to write a blog post that is so blatantly biased. They gave a long list of reasons that Firefox is better than Google Chrome. I’m now going to go through his post, and talk about how very little of it is completely correct. The vast majority of it is either untrue, or completely subjective. I’m not even going to try to talk about the advantages of Chrome over Firefox, apart from the obvious.

I recently got back from a FOBISSEA Music trip in Manila. The trip was heaps of fun, although there were a huge number of issues with it.

I’m sitting here, having finally gotten a moment of peace after a disastrous first day of FOBISSEA Music 2009* in Manila.

Simplifying Google

Sat, Oct 24, 2009

As you may have already heard about somewhere, Google is experimenting with a new homepage. Google is well-known for being minimalistic, and for striving for simplicity. The idea that Google is now trying out is to remove most of the text from their already simple homepage.

Before, Google’s homepage had eight words along the top left (Web, Images → more), up to five words in the top right (Google username, iGoogle, Settings, Sign out), and not much more than a dozen words in the centre of the page. With this new fading homepage, the only items visible on-screen are the famous Google logo, and a box for typing. The cursor is placed by default in this box, so there is no need to move the mouse to click on it. Should the user want to access the other tools, all they need to do is move the mouse, and the rest of the text appears with a subtle fade-in. It is worth noting, however, that with this version of the homepage; the search buttons, including Google’s famous “I’m feeling lucky” button, do not reappear, although I have heard that Google is experimenting with different versions that do have these fade in.
